Nigeria’s Regulatory Challenges for Meta

Meta faces the potential shutdown of Facebook and Instagram in Nigeria due to significant fines and regulatory demands, totaling over $290 million, imposed by three Nigerian agencies for various violations. The Nigerian Data Protection Commission’s strict requirements, including prior approval for data transfers and educational content on data privacy, have been deemed “unrealistic” by Meta, which unsuccessfully challenged the fines in court. The company must comply by the end of June or risk losing access to its popular platforms, crucial for communication and businesses in Nigeria.
