Palestinian student detained at US citizenship interview released on bail

Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi, arrested by US immigration authorities during his citizenship interview, was ordered released on bail by a federal judge. Defiantly addressing President Trump, Mahdawi, a Palestinian permanent resident and co-founder of a pro-Palestinian student group, accused the administration of violating his free speech rights amid a crackdown on foreign students involved in protests. Judge Geoffrey Crawford’s ruling highlighted the need to protect constitutional rights, drawing parallels to McCarthyism in the context of political repression against dissenting voices.
