Thousands of UK deaths could be linked to ultra-processed foods

A new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine links ultra-processed foods (UPFs) to approximately 17,781 premature deaths in the UK, with UPFs comprising 53% of the UK’s energy intake. The research indicates that UPFs, which include items like sweetened cereals, ready meals, and flavored yogurts, may contribute to health issues such as obesity and heart disease due to their high levels of unhealthy ingredients and additives. Experts are urging governments to implement dietary recommendations to reduce UPF consumption and improve public health.
