Rising tensions in South Sudan, culminating in the arrest of Vice-President Riek Machar, have raised concerns of another civil war in the world’s youngest nation. The fragile 2018 peace agreement, which ended five years of conflict, is at risk as the country faces ongoing political and ethnic divisions within the government. The failure to implement key parts of the agreement, coupled with long-standing tensions between Machar and President Salva Kiir, has heightened the risk of further instability and violence in the country.
