Professor Alexandra Bitušíková highlights the importance of face-to-face local activism in ousting Marian Kotleba, leader of the People’s Party Our Slovakia. Drawing on her personal experience growing up in Czechoslovakia, she emphasizes the significance of grassroots efforts in preserving democracy, particularly in the face of extremist threats. By mobilizing like-minded individuals and rallying in historic squares, Bitušíková and her community were able to effectively challenge and ultimately remove Kotleba from power.
