A prisoner, John Sione Moala, objected to being transferred to a maximum-security unit and allegedly became violent, ripping a payphone off the wall and attempting to strike a Corrections officer. During the ensuing altercation, the officer fell over a balustrade and was injured, leading to Moala being convicted and receiving additional prison time. However, a senior court has overturned one of Moala’s convictions, ruling that a miscarriage of justice occurred, and has ordered a new trial before a jury.
