Budapest protests: Who is Peter Magyar, Hungary’s rising opposition star?

In Hungary, a rising star in the opposition has garnered support from tens of thousands of supporters, promising to align with the European mainstream if he is successful in challenging Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s rule. Peter Magyar, a 43-year-old lawyer and former diplomat, emerged on the political scene following the resignation of two key Orban allies, including his ex-wife Judit Varga, the former justice minister. Magyar aims to build momentum leading up to the European Parliament elections in June.
Speaking at a rally outside the Hungarian parliament building in Budapest, Magyar emphasized that he is not trying to take on the entire power elite single-handedly but rather ignite a movement for change. He plans to announce the political party through which he will challenge Orban’s party in the upcoming European Union elections and municipal elections in Hungary. Currently, he is recruiting supporters through a civic group.
A recent poll suggests that a party led by Magyar could become a strong opposition force in Hungary, though still trailing behind Orban’s Fidesz party. Magyar gained public attention during a public fallout with his ex-wife that exposed corruption allegations in the country.
Under Orban’s leadership, Hungary has faced criticism for corruption and rule of law issues, leading to the suspension of a significant portion of EU funding. Magyar aims to resolve disputes with the EU and secure Hungary’s remaining funds. Despite his relatively sudden rise to prominence, many see Magyar as a potential leader to challenge Orban’s regime and bring about change.
Magyar’s involvement in releasing a tape related to a corruption case involving high-profile figures put Orban’s government on the defensive. The premier’s supporters have launched attacks against Magyar, highlighting his past ties to state-owned companies. However, supporters believe Magyar’s ability to distance himself from the previous system gives him a unique position to lead the opposition against Orban’s government.
As Magyar continues to build support and momentum, many see his emergence as an opportunity to mobilize against Orban’s rule and address longstanding grievances in Hungary. The sudden rise of Magyar has sparked hope among demonstrators for a new direction in the country’s political landscape.
