Federal election 2025: Coalition jettisons plan to stop public servants working from home

The Coalition reversed its decision to mandate public servants to work in the office full-time after facing backlash from female voters and suburban families concerned about post-pandemic work arrangements. Shadow finance minister Jane Hume stated that the party will not alter current work-from-home policies, despite still planning to reduce the public service workforce by 41,000 through a hiring freeze and natural attrition. Labor’s scare campaign on the issue was deemed misleading by Hume, who emphasized the importance of flexible work arrangements and the Coalition’s support for the private sector in making such decisions.
