India is considering adopting new international standards, specifically the World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84) datum, to calculate the exact coordinates of its shoreline and baselines, moving away from the outdated Everest Ellipsoid system. This shift may result in an increase in India’s maritime borders, impacting territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zones (EEZ) by a few meters to a few hundred meters. The Ministry of External Affairs is discussing aligning the new system with global standards, potentially leading to changes in territorial waters, the contiguous zone, the continental shelf, the EEZ, and maritime boundaries.
