Former Medellin Cartel boss released in Colombia after a judge rules his sentence expired

Former Medellin Cartel boss Carlos Lehder was released in Bogotá, Colombia after a judge ruled that his drug trafficking sentence had expired, despite being arrested upon his arrival in the country. Lehder, extradited to the U.S. in 1987 and serving over 30 years in prison, was deported to Germany in 2020 after serving two-thirds of his sentence. He played a key role in the Medellin Cartel and owned properties in Colombia and the Bahamas, becoming known for his criminal activities and connections with Pablo Escobar.
