Scientists hope hungry weevils from Louisiana can tackle South Africa's invasive water plants

Dozens of black weevils are being used to combat the invasive aquatic plant Salvinia minima in South Africa’s Crocodile River and Hartbeespoort Dam, threatening ecosystems in three northern provinces and neighboring countries. The weevils, brought from Louisiana, feed exclusively on the plant without harming the local ecosystem, causing the salvinia to sink and die. While the weevils offer a solution to the spread of salvinia, experts warn of potential unintended consequences such as the growth of dangerous organisms like cyanobacteria in the waterways, emphasizing the need for comprehensive strategies to address the issue.
