Species extinctions are escalating, causing a loss of biodiversity globally, with unequal distribution of funding for conservation projects revealed by University of Hong Kong researchers; only US$1.93 billion allocated over 25 years across 14,600 projects, predominantly favoring ‘charismatic’ species like tigers and elephants, leaving many threatened species unsupported. Vertebrates received 82.9% of funds, while plants and invertebrates only received 6.6% each, prompting a call for a more equitable approach to conservation funding to address the neglect of vulnerable species and safeguard global biodiversity.
