South East Asia’s mega-quake: Most powerful to hit Thailand in 200 years leaves thousands feared dead and scores buried alive under hundreds of collapsed buildings

A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake has resulted in over 153 confirmed deaths in Thailand, with thousands feared dead, as well as 144 fatalities and 732 injuries in Myanmar, and 10 deaths in Bangkok due to a collapsed high-rise construction site. Rescue efforts are ongoing, with hundreds still missing in the rubble. Myanmar has declared a state of emergency and the UN has allocated $5 million for relief efforts, while the US has pledged support after a rare call for help from Myanmar’s ruling military junta.
