Police in Istanbul used pepper spray, plastic pellets, and water cannon against protesters following the arrest of Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a rival to President Erdogan, on corruption and terrorism charges. Nearly 1,900 people have been arrested in the eight days of protests, with violence erupting as police attempted to disperse the largely peaceful demonstrations. Imamoglu’s detention is seen as politically motivated, sparking outrage over Turkey’s democratic decline and economic woes.
