In 2023 and 2024, the majority of 24-hour driving disqualification orders avoiding penalty points were granted by Naas District Court, with 27 out of 33 ancillary disqualification orders nationwide coming from there. The loophole allowing drivers to avoid penalty points was highlighted over a year ago, leading to an amending provision in the Road Traffic Act 2024 to close it, which has yet to be commenced. The Department of Transport aims to have the provision put before the Minister by the end of the month, as drivers continue to exploit the loophole until it is closed.
