Karen Schepers, a 23-year-old Elgin woman missing since 1983, was found in the Fox River in her 1980 Toyota Celica, confirmed by Elgin police after a search conducted by Chaos Divers using specialized sonar equipment. The vehicle was discovered with the matching license plate, XP8919, near the Slade Avenue boat launch, and efforts to safely remove it were planned for the following day to determine if any human remains were inside. The car’s location, away from the expected route, led to theories of an accident due to dark road conditions, high river levels, and adverse weather on the night Schepers disappeared, as explored in the Elgin Police Department Cold Case Unit’s podcast “Somebody Knows Something.”
