International students have been blamed for contributing to rising housing costs by politicians such as Treasurer Jim Chalmers and Victorian Liberal Senator Jane Hume, but research from the University of South Australia and the Student Accommodation Council shows that they are not the main cause of the rental crisis. Data analysis revealed no significant correlation between international student numbers and rental costs, with complex socio-economic factors being the true drivers of the housing crisis. Efforts to limit international student numbers could have negative economic implications, as international education is a significant export contributing billions to the Australian economy.
