What is the U.S. Institute of Peace and why is Trump trying to shut it down?

The Trump administration attempted to dismantle the US Institute of Peace (USIP) headquarters, a congressionally funded think tank focused on conflict resolution. The move prompted a standoff between police and USIP board members. USIP was created in 1984 to study peaceful resolutions to conflict globally and has since become influential in international affairs, but has faced criticism for favoring Democratic-leaning appointments.
