Peruvian farmer Saul Luciano Lliuya is suing German energy giant RWE over the threat to his home from a mountain lake overflowing with glacier meltwater. Lliuya is using a German property law to seek compensation for the cost of building a dyke to protect his home and the city of Huaraz. This landmark climate lawsuit is the first of nearly 50 similar cases around the world and could set a legal precedent for holding companies accountable for their role in climate change. RWE denies legal responsibility, arguing that climate change is a global issue that should be addressed through government policy, not in court.
