Alberta has secured a one-year extension on its childcare agreement with Ottawa, receiving $1.17 billion in federal funding for 2026-2027, which will maintain the $15-a-day parent fee. Education Minister Demetrios Nicolaides emphasized the need for sustainable childcare solutions amid challenges with the current model. The agreement allows for 5,000 additional for-profit childcare spaces while removing caps on family day-home funding. Federal Minister Patty Hajdu highlighted the importance of affordable childcare for both parents and children’s development.
