Unions Warn of Response to Notwithstanding Clause in Alberta

Unions in Alberta, representing over 350,000 workers, have strongly opposed the UCP government’s potential use of the Charter’s notwithstanding clause to force teachers back to work without a contract, warning of an “unprecedented response.” Premier Danielle Smith maintains that the province’s offer, including a 12% salary increase and funding for 3,000 new teachers, is fair, but remains firm against guarantees for classroom sizes.
