Experience cherry blossom season in Japan at Jozi’s Hyde Park Corner with House of Suntory’s seven Saturdays of Japanese culture and craftsmanship masterclasses, running from 16 March to 27 April.
Treat yourself or a loved one to one of the seven Japanese culture and craftsmanship masterclasses hosted by House Of Suntory at their latest pop-up in Hyde Park Corner.
The pop-up offers visitors a taste of Japanese culture, craftsmanship, and hospitality with daily tastings from Tuesdays to Fridays, and weekly masterclasses on Saturdays at Hyde Park Corner’s Center Court.
During the daily tastings, guests can enjoy food, gin, and whisky pairings that showcase authentic Japanese flavors, while the weekly masterclasses cover topics like ‘furoshiki’ (Japanese gift-wrapping), ‘ikebana’ (Japanese flower arrangement), ‘origami’, the selection process of ‘tsukuriwake’, and the art of bonsai.
When and where?
House Of Suntory’s pop-up tastings take place on weekdays (Tuesday-Friday) at 13:00 and 19:00. Lunch and dinner seating is available for groups of up to 12 people, so be sure to secure your spot by booking a ticket in advance at R400 per person.
The masterclasses are held on Saturdays at 11:00. Each two-hour masterclass includes a tasting experience of Roku, Toki, and Hibiki paired with canapés by KoL. Participants will also receive a complimentary bottle of Roku Gin to take home. Secure your spot in advance by booking a ticket at R1200 per person.
Here’s an overview of what to expect from the masterclasses:
Week 1: Saturday, 16 March — Furoshiki
Learn Japanese gift-wrapping techniques using square cloth – furoshiki. Participants will receive a House of Suntory test bottle and furoshiki cloth to practice wrapping.
Week 2: Saturday, 23 March — Bonsai
Discover the art of bonsai – cultivating miniature trees in containers. Create your own bonsai using the tools and materials provided.
Week 3: Saturday, 30 March — Origami
Explore Japanese paper folding techniques and create your own origami pieces to take home.
Week 4: Saturday, 6 April — Ikebana
Learn the art of Japanese flower arrangement – ikebana – and create your own arrangement to take home.
Week 5: Saturday, 13 April — Tsukuriwake (The Art of Blending)
Delve into the art of blending in Japanese whisky and enjoy a traditional Japanese cocktail masterclass.
Week 6: Saturday, 20 April — Woodblock Printing
Experience Japanese woodblock printing and create your own print to take home.
Week 7: Saturday, 27 April — Furoshiki
Learn Japanese gift-wrapping techniques once again and receive a House of Suntory test bottle and furoshiki cloth.
The pop-up will conclude on Saturday 27 April.
