A former political candidate, Kelvin Andrew Martin, 65, has been sentenced to an indefinite prison term for multiple convictions of child sexual abuse. Initially appointed to the Te Atatū Marae Development Board in 2003, Martin’s political aspirations were derailed after his 2007 arrest for attempting to meet a 14-year-old girl for sex, which led to the discovery of child exploitation material at his home. He was arrested again in December 2023 for sexually abusing two more young girls. After a failed bid for name suppression, he can now be publicly identified.
