At least 23 Congolese soldiers are facing the death penalty or lengthy prison sentences for alleged crimes including rape, desertion, and misuse of military weapons in the conflict-ridden east of the country. The soldiers were arraigned before a military court in North Kivu province, where security forces have been battling numerous rebel groups. The region continues to experience violence, with recent attacks by rebel groups and clashes with Congolese forces leading to displacement of many residents.
