Over 12,300 targets struck in Iran during ongoing military operation

US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that it has targeted over 12,300 sites within Iran as part of a military operation that commenced on February 28. The operation has resulted in the damage or destruction of more than 155 naval vessels. A diverse array of military assets, including strategic bombers, fighter jets, drones, and missile defense systems, have been utilized. The conflict has intensified since the US and Israel executed a joint attack on Iran, which led to the deaths of over 1,340 individuals, including Iran’s then-Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran has launched drone and missile strikes against Israel and Gulf nations housing US military installations. Since the operation’s inception, 13 US service members have died, with approximately 303 others injured.

Why It Matters

This escalation follows a long history of tension between the US, Israel, and Iran, rooted in geopolitical struggles over influence in the Middle East. The recent joint US-Israeli attack marks a significant increase in military engagement and reflects ongoing hostilities since the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018. Iran’s subsequent retaliatory actions demonstrate its willingness to respond aggressively to perceived threats, impacting regional stability. The situation complicates US military strategy in the region and raises concerns about civilian casualties and broader implications for international relations.
