More than 606 migrants dead or missing in Mediterranean this year

At least 606 migrants have died or gone missing in the Mediterranean since the start of 2026, marking the deadliest beginning to a year since 2014, according to the International Organization for Migration. A recent incident off the coast of Crete involved a boat carrying migrants from Sudan and Egypt, where at least 30 individuals were reported dead or missing after the vessel sank. The boat had departed from Tobruk, Libya, and was attempting to reach Greece when it encountered bad weather.
