Following 9/11, the U.S. government invested heavily in the field to bolster national security interests, but this inadvertently led to the emergence of critical scholarship that challenges dominant narratives about the region. As the Free Palestine movement gains traction, rooted in academic understanding of colonialism, the defunding of Middle East studies reflects fears of knowledge that could undermine U.S. political agendas related to Gaza.
