Hamas congratulated Pope Leo XIV on his election as the head of the Catholic Church, expressing hope that he will continue supporting the oppressed and opposing genocide in Gaza, following the legacy of his predecessor, Pope Francis. In their statement, Hamas praised Pope Francis’s humanitarian stance and urged Pope Leo XIV to act against what they termed the “genocide and ethnic cleansing” in Gaza, while also calling for an end to violations of holy sites in Palestine. The Vatican announced that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost is the first American to become Pope.
