The Volkswagen ID. Buzz GTX electric people mover has finally been revealed, giving the spiritual successor to the iconic Kombi the most power yet.

As the new flagship to the ID. Buzz range, the GTX follows other Volkswagen ID-branded models by adding a 250kW dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrain to the people mover.

It has yet to be confirmed for Australia, but Volkswagen’s local division has expressed interest in adding the GTX to its upcoming ID. Buzz GTX lineup.

“We want the ID. Buzz GTX for Australia. As yet it is unconfirmed however we are working through potential local timings,” a Volkswagen spokesperson told CarExpert.

Available in two wheelbase lengths: standard (SWB) and long (LWB), the former with a 79kWh battery and the latter with an 86kWh pack.

The two lithium-ion batteries can be charged at up to 185kW and 200kW respectively.

While there’s a difference in braked towing capacity between the pair – 1800kg for SWB, and 1600kg for the LWB – both boast a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time of 6.5 seconds.

Visually, the ID. Buzz GTX is distinguished from its non-performance siblings by its black honeycomb lower grille, new side air guides, and standard matrix LED headlights.

New ‘Venlo’ design 19-inch alloy wheels will be fitted to the ID.Buzz GTX as standard, though it’s the all-black Caracas and black/diamond-cut Townsville 21-inch alloys that are showcased in these images.

The Cherry red paint shown is exclusive to the GTX variant and is available with Mono silver for a two-tone finish. There are six other solid colors and four two-tone options available, though these have not been detailed yet.

Inside, the black headliner is exclusive to the GTX, paired with power-adjustable front seats with memory upholstered in diamond pattern ArtVelours Eco microfleece with red contrast stitching and piping.

The seats feature a design similar to the Golf GTI hot hatch.

The standard-wheelbase ID. Buzz GTX is equipped with five seats, offering 1121L of claimed storage space with the second row upright and 2123L when folded down.

Long-wheelbase versions include seven seats, providing 306L of storage with all rows in their seated positions, 1340L with the third row folded, and 2469L with the second row dropped.

A larger 12.9-inch infotainment screen replaces the standard Buzz’s 12.0-inch unit, and the GTX will be one of Volkswagen’s first models to feature ChatGPT-powered AI functionality integrated into the car’s voice assistant.

There will also be an optional head-up display available in most markets.

Additional optional equipment includes a “wellness app” that can adjust the cabin mood by changing background lighting, sound settings, air conditioning, and seat settings, as well as a panoramic sunroof.

Exclusive to the long-wheelbase GTX is an optional panoramic sunroof with smart glass that can switch from transparent to opaque.

Safety features from the regular ID. Buzz carry over to the GTX, with the addition of exit warning to prevent the people mover’s doors from being opened into oncoming cyclists and pedestrians.

European deliveries of the ID. Buzz GTX will begin in the coming month. The non-GTX ID. Buzz SWB and the ID. Buzz Cargo are expected to arrive in Australia in December 2024, with the LWB due to follow in the first half of 2025.
