A high-level Defence Ministry committee has accepted the Indian Air Force’s need for new multirole fighter aircraft to enhance its fighting capabilities, as part of the report on ‘Capability Enhancement of IAF’ submitted by Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh. The Indian Air Force will prepare a statement of case for acquiring these capabilities, with potential involvement from the French Rafale and Swedish Gripen fighters, as well as fifth-generation aircraft like the F-35 and Su-57, to meet the requirement for 114 multirole fighter aircraft. If a tender process is followed, these aircraft, including single and twin-engine fighters, are likely to be considered.
