Israel announced on Sunday that it had recovered the body of a soldier, Oron Shaul, who was killed in combat in 2014 and held by Hamas in Gaza since then. The operation to retrieve Shaul’s remains was carried out by the Israeli army and the Shin Bet security agency. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed the recovery of the body before a ceasefire took effect, and the soldier’s family was informed once his remains were officially identified. Shaul was a staff sergeant in the Golani Brigade and was killed during the 2014 Gaza war.
