Taiwan’s intelligence bureau has revealed that China’s main spy agency is collaborating with criminal gangs, shell companies, and other dubious partners to gather intelligence on Taiwan’s defenses, leading to a significant increase in arrests for alleged espionage. Current and retired Taiwanese military personnel are of particular concern, with around half of the 64 alleged spies put on trial last year belonging to this group. The arrests are part of China’s broader campaign of military intimidation and coercion, utilizing tactics such as using the internet to promote unification and providing all-expense-paid trips to China to low-level government officials.
