Myanmar's defence ties with Russia irk China

Myanmar’s acquisition of six Sukhoi Su30 fighter jets from Russia, under a $400 million contract signed in 2018, has raised concerns in China as it fears losing influence in the region. The Russian-made jets, stationed at Naypyidaw Air Base, are intended to bolster Myanmar’s defence capabilities and counter terror threats, potentially impacting rebel groups along the border with India. Chinese social media has shown disapproval of the growing Russian presence in what it considers its backyard.
