China has deployed around 400 military personnel to the Larung Gar Buddhist Academy in eastern Tibet to tighten control over the region, according to reports from the Central Tibetan Administration. The troops arrived on December 20, 2024, accompanied by helicopter surveillance, signaling increased security measures at the academy, which has faced restrictions and crackdowns from the Chinese government in the past, resulting in a significant reduction in population and plans for new regulations limiting residents’ stay to 15 years.
