China says it takes 'necessary measures' to defend sovereignty over Taiwan

China’s government stated that it will defend its sovereignty and opposes “separatist” activities, as Taiwan reported an increase in Chinese warplanes near the island. Taiwan believes the military activity is a message to the incoming U.S. administration. Beijing’s military has not commented on the exercises, but Taiwan’s defence ministry raised concerns about China’s naval fleet deployment in regional waters.
