The Syrian rebels’ capture of Aleppo from President Bashar al-Assad has reignited the Syrian civil war, shaking up previously dormant frontlines with implications for the region and beyond. This surprise offensive began on Nov. 26, as rebels attacked from the north and northwest before sweeping into the city on Nov. 29-30, displacing government forces for the first time since 2016. The rebels have continued to advance in areas south and southwest of Aleppo, gaining territory in Hama province.
